“…Similar responses in terms of NO changes were also observed in Cd-exposed Medicago roots [15] and confirm unequivocal action of the given compounds despite various species and applied concentrations. Impact of SNP and PTIO on Cd-induced changes observed here is in accordance with data from various species and indicates similar action despite different applied concentrations: SNP ameliorates negative Cd influence but (c)PTIO reverses this action in terms of oxidative stress-related parameters [15], [20], [21]. Our present data are in agreement with mentioned studies and confirm our earlier study where PTIO induced increase in ROS in Cu-exposed chamomile roots [6].…”

“…It was suggested that the protective effect of NO could consist of stimulation of SOD activity to counteract the overproduction of superoxide radicals, thus preventing the formation of peroxynitrite from NO and O 2 − . Similar properties of NO were also found in plants under aluminum, cadmium and copper stress Singh et al 2008;Li et al 2012;Qiu et al 2013). On the other hand, Cassia tora plants pretreated for 12 h with 0.4 mM SNP and then treated with 10 mM aluminum for 24 h showed significantly greater root elongation and decrease in accumulation of aluminum in root apexes compared to control plants (Wang and Yang 2005).…”

“…These results are in accordance with our previous study in which we demonstrated that NO counteracted Cd-induced decrease in the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Qiu et al (2013) have also reported that NO upregulated the components of the antioxidant defense machinery activities of SOD, POD, and CAT. Improved activities of SOD, POD, and CAT in Cd-stressed peanut plants prevented lipid peroxidation and MDA production, and thus the plant cells were protected from Cd stress damage.…”
