Nigella sativa protects against ischaemia/reperfusion injury in rat kidneys

Abstract: Background: Renal ischaemia followed by reperfusion leads to acute renal failure in both native kidneys and renal allografts, which is a complex pathophysiologic process involving hypoxia and free radical (FR) damage. The oil of Nigella sativa (NSO) has been subjected to considerable pharmacological investigations that have revealed its antioxidant activity in different conditions. But there is no previously reported study about its effect on ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of kidneys. The aim of this study… Show more

“…The polymer is far less toxic but retains much of the pharmacologic properties of TQ, which is the active principle of the plant. The pharmacological actions of the seeds of Nigella sativa or its constituents that have been reported include protection against nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity induced by either disease or chemicals [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. The seeds/oil have anti-inflammatory [15], analgesic [4], antipyretic [16], spasmolytic [17], bronchodialator [17], antihistaminic [18], antihypertensive [19], antitumor [20], antioxidant [18], antineoplastic [9,21,22], antifertility [23], antibacterial [24], antifungal [25], antiprotozoal [26], anthelmintic [27] and insecticidal [28] activities.…”

“…The majority of studies that have been performed to evaluate the different effects of NS have been confined to address its antitoxic properties [9,10,26,27]. In addition to this, many investigators have determined the antioxidant activities of NS in vivo [6][7][8].…”

“…The seeds or oil of Nigella sativa (NS), belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, commonly known as black seed or black cumin, have been used as a natural remedy for a number of diseases and conditions such as asthma, cough, bronchitis, headache, eczema, fever, dizziness and influenza [6]. NS contains >30 w/w of fixed oil and 0.45 w/w of a volatile oil.…”

“…Second, it detoxifies the free radicals action by either acting itself as antioxidant or indirectly by significantly improving serum enzymatic activities of SOD, GSH peroxidase, and CAT thus further augmenting the antioxidant mechanism. 43,44 Further preclinical and clinical studies are required to confirm and elucidate the protective effect of N. sativa against NSAIDs induced damages.…”
