Newer PET Application with an Old Tracer: Role of18F-NaF Skeletal PET/CT in Oncologic Practice

Abstract: The skeleton is one of the most common sites for metastatic disease, particularly from breast and prostate cancer. Bone metastases are associated with considerable morbidity, and accurate imaging of the skeleton is important in determining the appropriate therapeutic plan. Sodium fluoride labeled with fluorine 18 (sodium fluoride F 18 [(18)F-NaF]) is a positron-emitting radiopharmaceutical first introduced several decades ago for skeletal imaging. (18)F-NaF was approved for clinical use as a positron emission … Show more

“…For some years now, another nuclear medical technique for studying bone metabolism, i.e., PET with F-18-fluoride, has been a focus of increasing attention (for reviews, see [70,71]). Some studies comparing its diagnostic performance in staging malignant disease with that of conventional nuclear medical bone imaging have demonstrated its superiority over planar bone scans and-albeit to a lesser degree-also over SPECT [72][73][74][75].…”

“…In the past, radioisotopes have provided an alternative method of studying bone turnover, and there is a large historical literature based on the use of bone seeking radionuclides such as 32 P, 45 Ca, 47 Ca and 85 Sr in non-imaging tracer studies (22)(23)(24)(25). Today, quantitative studies of bone using radionuclides are based around medical imaging using either hybrid positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) dual-modality systems (26) or the gamma camera (27).…”
