Abstract: Mr. Appleton's value of 700 kgf/cm 2 (69 MN/m 2 ) for the maximum hoop stress in the conductors seems excessive. As stated in Section 4.2 of the paper, we have chosen the tube thicknesses so that, under fault conditions, the yield stress of the aluminium, taken as 30 MN/m 2 , is not exceeded. There would appear to be insufficient data available to determine whether creep is likely to be a problem at lower stresses, and experimental work to determine this is needed.
