New SMOS SSS maps in the framework of the Earth Observation data For Science and Innovation in the Black Sea

Abstract: Abstract. In the framework of the European Space Agency (ESA) regional initiative called Earth Observation data For Science and Innovation in the Black Sea (EO4SIBS), a new dedicated Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) product is generated for the Black Sea for the years 2011–2020. Three SMOS SSS fields are retrieved and distributed: a level 2 product consisting of binned SSS in daily maps at 0.25° × 0.25° spatial resolution grid by considering ascending ((Olmedo et al., 2021b), … Show more

“…and proposed a dedicated technique, the nodal sampling (NS), to mitigate the impact of RFI contamination. This technique has been successfully applied at a global scale and in the Black Sea (Olmedo et al, 2021a). However, the application of the NS for the specific case of the Baltic Sea did not show a significant improvement.…”

“…Level-2, Level-3 and Level-4 SMOS SSS datasets are generated starting from the brightness temperature derived from the SMOS Level-0 data. The complete description of the algorithms as well as the quality assessment of the resulting Level 3 SMOS SSS products are provided in Olmedo et al (2022). Here, we briefly summarize the main improvements introduced from the data processing point of view for taking into account the Black Sea's particular geographic and geophysical conditions and we refer to Olmedo et al (2022) for further details.…”

“…This technique consists in sampling the brightness temperature at nodal points, defined as points where the contamination vanishes and the geophysical signal presents its minimum distortion. This algorithm has been enhanced by including a sea-land mask with the aim at mitigating a residual contamination that persisted in the first ~75 km close to the coast (Olmedo et al, 2022).…”
