Abstract: The Restinga Antwren (Formicivora littoralis) has a narrow distribution range in southeastern Brazil, and it is a typical species of restinga habitat (sandy coastal plain vegetation). In this paper, we describe two new records for the species (22° 51' 45" S and 42° 14' 13" W; 22° 51' 14" S and 42° 11' 47" W) in the northern margin of the Araruama Lagoon, which represent a new inland limit for its distribution (11 km), besides assessing the current state of its habitat. We recorded supposed isolated subpopulati… Show more

“…This area is located within the Environmental Protection Area (APA) of Sapeatiba, with an area of 169.4 ha, of which 135.52 ha are composed of restinga and dry forest, and 33.88 ha by disturbed areas. The NEIG consists of a mosaic of habitats marked by the presence of some patches of typical restinga vegetation, tropical dry forest and disturbed areas (Vecchi and Alves, 2008), and is located approximately 11 km from the Atlantic Ocean, bounded northward by the RJ-106 highway and southward by the Araruama lagoon (CPRM, 2000). Moreover, the NEIG represents the most conserved remnant area in the northern portion of Araruama Lagoon Basin (Silveira-Primo and Bizerril, 2000).…”

“…A great portion of the knowledge on restingas consists of information on their geomorphology (e.g. Bigarella 1965aBigarella , b, 1971Bigarella et al, 1965Bigarella et al, , 1966Flexor et al, 1984), limnology (see Esteves, 1998;Esteves and Lacerda, 2000;Farjalla et al, 2001;Rocha et al, 2004b), and vegetation (see Almeida and Araújo, 1997;Araújo and Henriques, 1984;Silva and Somner, 1984;Pereira and Araújo 2000;Zaluar and Scarano, 2000;Araújo et al, 2004;Scarano et al, 2004;Rocha et al, 2004b). However, for vertebrate faunas the knowledge is, comparatively, still incipient and restricted (Rocha et al, 2004a).…”

“…This species has a small range, only inhabiting the area in the state of Rio de Janeiro between the municipalities of Saquarema and Armação dos Búzios (Mattos et al 2009). The little scientifi c information about this species in the literature mostly addresses its ecology, conservation, and distribution (Gonzaga and Pacheco 1990, Tobias and Williams 1996, Vecchi and Alves 2008 Nest, egg, and nestling measurements were made with calipers (precision 0.1 mm) and a scale (Pesola ® with 0.1 g precision); height of nests above ground were scored using a tape measure (precision 1 cm).…”
