New, High Efficiency Nonlinear Optical Chalcone Co-Crystal and Structure–Property Relationship

Abstract: In our present study, we attempted to grow the single crystals of (2E)-1-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-[4-(methylsulfanyl)phenyl]prop-2-en-1-one by making use of the slow evaporation solution growth technique at room temperature. But the single crystal X-ray diffraction technique revealed that the grown crystal was a co-crystal with molecular formula C 16 H 13 Br 0.66 Cl 0.34 OS (4Br4MSP/4Cl4MSP). The presence of functional groups in the molecular structure is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy.… Show more

“…Since small organic molecules commonly refine to better than R = 0.05 [19], there exists a good agreement between observed and calculated intensities. In addition the low value of R shows the purity of the grown single crystal [20].…”

“…Electron delocalization across this enone submolecular fragment is reflected by their molecular polarizability and hyperpolarizability. Weak hydrogen-bonding interactions have been found to stabilize non-centrosymmetric packing of chalcones in the solid-state, conferring a quadratic NLO response to the resulting crystals [20][21][22].…”

“…13,[15][16][17][18] Also, due to its chemical structure, several chalcones have been reported to exhibit non-linear optical (NLO) properties that turn these compounds into potential functional materials. [19][20][21] A study with methoxychalcone 19 investigated the optical properties of 3,4-dimethoxy-4'-methoxychalcone and it has shown promise for nonlinear optical applications. On the basis of these features, the investigation on structural and synthetic perspective assumes noteworthy importance for the extending and understanding of the applicability of molecule.…”
