New Empirical Correlation To Predict Apparent Viscosity of Borate-Crosslinked Guar Gel in Fractures

Abstract: Summary Successful design and completion of hydraulic fracturing treatments depend on accurate estimation of fracturing fluid viscosity. This requires better knowledge of the fluid viscosity under in situ conditions. The viscosity estimation is even more important for borate-crosslinked guar gel because the gel behavior depends on temperature, wellbore shear pre-conditioning, fracture shear rate, and fluid pH. These factors require that the fluid characterization be performed under representa… Show more

“…In the food industry, galactomannans as guar and locust bean gum enjoy widespread use based on their ability to thicken and stabilize many food products 7. Among the oil and textile industries, galactomannan gums are the major ingredients in drilling mud and are used mainly also for their capacity to increase printing quality 8–11. The functional properties of these polysaccharides are of primary importance for controlling the release of gastrointestinal drugs in the pharmaceutical industry 6, 12, 13…”

“…A borate cross-linker and a zirconium cross-linker were applied to study gel formation. Borate cross-linkers have been used commonly in fracturing applications in the oil industry, where they have been found to be effective at increasing viscosity and improving the fluid-loss control and proppant transportability of guar and its derivative fluids. Boric acid is known as such a pH-sensitive cross-linker that can reversibly cross-link polymers through hydroxyl groups . At higher pH values, the boron is more inclined to attach itself as a borate ion to a polymer molecule in the basic solution and acts as a cross-linker.…”

“…Relaxation time is the ratio of the characteristic constant viscosity to the modulus of the material, and it is a function of the contribution of each relaxation mode to the overall performance of the polymer. Studying the change of relaxation time spectrum can better understand the law of fluid viscoelastic change (Ramkumar et al 2015;Kontou 1998;Gotlib et al 2003).…”

“…With its excellent rheological properties, the sand body is stably suspended in liquid state, and the proppant sand is brought to the designated position (Kruijf et al 1993;Jin and Penny 1995;Holtsclaw et al 2011;Malhotra and Sharma 2011;Lei and Clark 2007;Goel et al 1998). The traditional evaluation method is to investigate the apparent viscosity of the fracturing fluid system, but whether there is a universal functional relationship between the apparent viscosity and the deposition rate of sand is always up in the air (Goel et al 2000;Pellens et al 2004). In the field application, the phenomenon of high apparent viscosity and weak sand suspension will also occur.…”
