New data on the palaeosteohistology and growth dynamic of the notosuchian Araripesuchus Price, 1959

Abstract: Notosuchian crocodyliforms represent an intriguing group since they are mainly terrestrial forms and therefore with completely different lifestyles than extant crocodylian, which is reflected in their particular skeletal anatomy. Although there are some inferences in the literature related to the palaeoecology of notosuchian, little is known about their biology (e.g. metabolism, growth dynamics). The palaeohistology allows us to perform interpretations about the growth dynamics and strategies of growth in thes… Show more

“…More generally, osteoderm ornamentation is absent in most notosuchians (Figure 6 ) apart from uruguaysuchids, peirosaurids, and Candidodon . Those taxa are inferred to have been terrestrial (Fernández Dumont et al, 2021 ), however some bear pits on their osteoderms (Coria et al, 2019 ; Leardi & Pol, 2009 ; Lio et al, 2016 ; Ortega et al, 2000 ; Price, 1955 ; Sereno & Larsson, 2009 ; Tavares et al, 2015 ).…”

“…In extinct taxa, a variable mode of growth can be found. For example, notosuchians Araripesuchus buitreraensis and Iberosuchus macrodon exhibit a relatively slow growth rate (Cubo et al, 2017; Fernandez Dumont et al, 2021), whereas other notosuchians like Adamantinasuchus navae , Mariliasuchus amarali , and Notosuchus terrestris show a moderate growth rate (Garcia Marsà et al, 2022; Sena et al, 2022), similar to the extant neosuchian Alligator mississippiensis (Woodward et al, 2014). Finally, the extinct neosuchian Pepesuchus deisea exhibits a higher rate of growth (Cubo et al, 2020; Sena et al, 2018).…”
