“…Roff, 1990) and may have occurred more than once in the Phaneropterinae. Therefore, other orthopterologists treat Barbitistini and Odonturini as separate groups (Otte, 1997;Eades et al, 2010). Although, the Barbitistini seem to be monophyletic (Ullrich et al, 2010) this may not be the case for Odonturini, which could be an assemblage of genera of short-winged forms that are only distantly related (Eades et al, 2010).…”

“…For example, in North America, the brachypterous genera Dichopetala Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878 (with 16 species), Arachnitus Hebard, 1932, andPsilinsara Hebard, 1932 (each with 1 species) are all found in arid regions from south Texas to Mexico. Brachyptery is common also in phaneropterines found in arid regions of the Palearctic Region: with more than 100 species combined in the genera Barbistes Charpentier, 1825, Isophya Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1878, and Poecilimum Fischer, 1853, which are distributed from southern Spain, across North Africa, and Asia Minor (Otte 1997). All species within these genera are exclusively brachypterous.…”

“…The Eurasian geographic unity of this group was marred by Brunner's inclusion of the Nearctic/Neotropical genus Dichopetala (with no discussion in his introduction to the group for incorporating this inclusion) and with two neotropical species of Isophya (I. brasiliensis Brunner von Wattenwyl and I. punctinervis Stål). Otte (1997) resolved this issue by placing Dichopetala in the Tribe Odonturini and Anisophya and the other genera in the Tribe Barbitistini.…”

“…Currently, the genus Steropleurus comprises 37 species and 45 subspecies, whose distribution covers Spain (19 species, 21 subspecies), Morocco (11 species, 15 subspecies), Algeria (4 species, 5 subspecies), Tunisia (4 species, 5 subspecies), Libya (3 species), France (1 species) and Italy (Sardinia, 1 species) (Nadig 1995;Otte 1997;Massa 1998;Gomez et al 1998;Eades et al 2006;present paper). The presence of this genus in Sardinia possibly dates back to the Late Miocene, after the eastern closing of the Mediterranean, determining temperature increase and water evaporation; thus, species evolution within the genus may have occurred through the Pliocene and Pleistocene, that is between seven and two million years ago.…”
