New Compounds with [As7]3– Clusters: Synthesis and Crystal Structures of the Zintl Phases Cs2NaAs7, Cs4ZnAs14 and Cs4CdAs14

Abstract: anions, where the clusters in Cs 4 ZnAs 14 and Cs 4 CdAs 14 are dimerized by the linkers Zn and Cd, respectively. The bonding characteristics of these clusters are discussed and compared. Band structure calculation on Cs 2 NaAs 7 suggests that this compound is a semiconductor with an energy gap of circa 1.6 eV, which is in consistent with the dark red color of the crystals.

“…Consequently, their crystal structures frequently display a high degree of complexity. Many known intermetallic compounds, especially those with group 15 elements, represent electronically balanced phases crystallizing in structures with huge unit cells and large numbers of atoms per cell [2,3,4,5,6,7]. Group 15 elements are commonly referred to as pnictogens, and their compounds with metals are called pnictides, which is the terminology adopted in this paper.…”

“…It is interesting to note that many of the ternary clusters observed in this work contain seven arsenic atoms. The possibility that the structures of some of these clusters might contain tri‐cyclic As 7 , so‐called Zintl arsenic, cannot be excluded even if there is no direct evidence for this. This suggestion is supported by the fact that an Au 2 (As 7 ) 2 4– anion is known which contains two tri‐cyclic As 7 clusters connected with two bridging Au atoms: As 7 (Au) 2 As 7 4– .…”

“…That Al 7 − and Al 7 Li tend to show +2 and +4 valence states in compounds makes them analogous to carbon‐group elements [12, 13]. Quasi‐phosphorus character of the As 7 , As 11 , and Al 12 Cu clusters have been revealed by both theoretical and experimental works [14–18]. The Al 12 Be and Ge 9 Be clusters have been found to have chemical behavior reminiscent of chalcogens and can be viewed as their superatom mimics [19, 20].…”
