Abstract: Due to the persistent lack of suitable vaccines, chemotherapy remains the only option for the treatment of patients infected by protozoan parasites. However, most available antiparasitic drugs have serious disadvantages, ranging from high cost and poor compliance to high toxicity and rapid induction of resistance. In recent decades basic research laboratories identified a considerable number of promising new molecules, but their development has not been pursued in depth by pharmaceutical firms because of poor … Show more

“…Quantitative immunoblotting estimated the amount of overexpression of the inhibitory constructs to be more than five times over the levels of the endogenous TbBILBO1 protein. 5 To observe the effect of deletion of the NTD and the two mutations in vivo, cells overexpressing these Ty1-tagged TbBILBO1 constructs were analyzed by immunofluorescence microscopy. In dividing cells, Ty1-TbBILBO1-FL was associated with both the old and new flagellum (Fig.…”

“…These similarly inhibit 5-HT 3 receptors, with IC 50 values close to plasma concentrations, and antagonize 5-HT 3 receptor-mediated gut contractions Kelley et al, 2014). Strategies to find analogous drugs (e.g., phenoxypropoxybiguanides) may therefore wish to consider their effects on 5-HT 3 receptors as an indication of gut intolerance earlier in their development (Shearer et al, 2005;Zucca et al, 2013). It is also noteworthy that the first-line antidiabetic drug metformin (Bolamyn, Glucophage) is also a biguanide, as are the related antidiabetics phenformin and buformin.…”

“…According to WHO, the number of leishmaniasis cases has been increasing during last two decades where more sensitivity with a high rate of Leishmania and AIDS co-infection cases is reported in patients suffering from AIDS in many areas [2][3][4][5]. Chemotherapy against Leishmania infestation, because of the toxicity and drug resistance, is not totally worthwhile [6,7]. It has been shown that Th1 immune responses are crucial in immunity to Leishmania parasite [8] and because of the capability of single antigenic proteins in inducing Th1 immune responses, these proteins are now in main focus of vaccine candidates against the pathogen [9,10].…”
