Abstract: The prognosis for patients with malignancies of the gastrointestinal-tract is strictly dependent on early detection of premalignant and malignant lesions. However, small, flat or depressed neoplastic lesions remain difficult to detect with these technologies thereby limiting their value for polyp and cancer screening. At the same time computer and chip technologies have undergone major technological changes which have greatly improved endoscopic diagnostic investigation. New imaging modalities and techniques a… Show more

“…Colonoscopy is a beneficial method in the evaluation of symptoms and abnormal radiological findings of lower gastrointestinal system as well as in the diagnosis and follow-up of colon cancers, and its usage for therapeutic purposes is gradually increasing [1,2]. Colonoscopy, which is accepted as the gold standard method for the examination of colon mucosa, allows for both performing a biopsy for diagnostic purposes and interventions (polypectomy, stopping bleeding, etc.)…”

“…Surveillance has to be ideally done during the quiescent phase to minimize the challenges in appreciating dysplasia with excellent bowel preparation. 96 The risk of CRC escalates from the second decade of IBD diagnosis, which forms the basis for stringent surveillance protocol. The traditional teaching of performing a minimum of 32 biopsies (systematic 4-quadrant biopsies every 10 cm) and separately for suspicious lesions, as agreed at the 2005 International Consensus Conference, is slowly losing grounds to more recent evidence-based targeted biopsies.…”

“…However, it is well accepted that WLE can miss a significant number of lesions including early cancers . To overcome these limitations, chromoendoscopy is used to enhance mucosal surface and vascular pattern morphology . However, because of a variety of staining materials and possible concentrations, the process is time‐consuming, sometimes inconclusive and cost‐expensive.…”

“…[14][15][16] To overcome these limitations, chromoendoscopy is used to enhance mucosal surface and vascular pattern morphology. 17,18 However, because of a variety of staining materials and possible concentrations, the process is time-consuming, sometimes inconclusive and cost-expensive. Therefore, the need for improvements in endoscopy technology, particularly for detecting early-stage cancers or flat lesions appears obvious.…”
