New Accelerometric Method to Discriminate Between Asymptomatic Subjects and Patients With Medial Knee Osteoarthritis During 3-D Gait

Abstract: This study presents a new method to estimate 3-D linear accelerations at tibial and femoral functional coordinate systems. The method combines the use of 3-D accelerometers, 3-D gyroscopes and reflective markers rigidly fixed on an exoskeleton and, a functional postural calibration method. Marker positions were tracked by a six-camera optoelectronic system (VICON 460, Oxford Metrics). The purpose of this study was to determine if this method could discriminate between medial osteoarthritic and asymptomatic kne… Show more

“…neurological diseases or psychiatric disorders) ones. Focussing in these last factors, gait can be used in elderly people for early diagnostic of Parkinson's disease (PD) (Barth et al, 2011), for the screening of knee osteoarthritis disease (Turcot et al, 2008), for detecting walking behaviour abnormalities that may indicate the onset of adverse health problems, or for the progression of neurodegenerative diseases (El Sayed et al, 2010). The presence of gait abnormalities in elderly persons is often a significant predictor of the risk of the development of dementia, especially nonAlzheimer's dementia (Verghese, et al, 2002).…”

“…Therefore, the detection and analysis of lower limb motion state in the rehabilitation training are very important. Especially the ambulatory estimation of lower limb posture using handy and portable wearable sensor system is very important in the diagnosis of patients with stroke, Parkinson or knee osteoarthritis disease [1], and useful to evaluate the rehabilitation of patients. As well, it will be a promising clinical tool to diagnose walking disabilities.…”

“…Also it can give the valuable information about the treatment of the disease and thus helps in improving the locomotion of patients. [7][8][9][10][11][12] Numerous researches have been done on gait analysis. Gait analysis has become a widespread application in biomedical engineering and has become an area of keen interest among biomedical engineers.…”
