Neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio in age‐related macular degeneration: a systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is aetiologically linked to immunological ageing and dysfunction. One aspect of this is the altered neutrophil-tolymphocyte ratio (NLR), which in other domains have been associated with inflammation and angiogenesis, and therefore investigated in patients with AMD in several papers. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we summarize findings in patients with AMD in relation to NLR, both qualitatively and quantitatively. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Sc… Show more

“…LCN2 is known to be produced predominately by neutrophils in the immune system (27). Previously, we and others have shown that nAMD patients had a higher percentage of circulating neutrophils compared to healthy controls (18,19,25,41). In this study, we observed a positive correlation between plasma levels of LCN2 and circulating neutrophils in nAMD patients but not in healthy controls ( Figure 2C-D).…”

“…It can also stimulate T cell activation by expressing MHC class II [118]. A stronger correlation has been shown between nAMD and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) elevation compared with healthy controls [119], and NLR is related to disease severity as well as CNV and lesion size [120,121]. Neutrophils are associated with retinal angiogenesis in laser-induced CNV.…”
