“…In flammatory mononuclear cell infiltrations in the dermis, composed of lymphocytes and a few macrophages around small blood ves sels with phagocytosed conglomerate mel anin granules. These findings prompted us to investigate a possible role of Ol-induccd tissue damage in the pathogenesis of prurigo pigmentosa, because we have previously found that several inflammatory skin dis eases are mediated in part by enhanced production of OIs [9,[13][14][15][16] and some anti inflammatory agents interfere with the OI production, thus conferring protection against auto-oxidative tissue injury [7,8,17], In the present study, we have shown the dose-dependent inhibitory effects of sul famethoxazole on hydroxyl radical and hy drogen peroxide production by PMNs as well as in the xanthine-xanthine oxidase sys tem. When compared with lymphocytes or macrophages, PMNs are readily stimulated by opsonized zymosan to generate Ols, and a sufficient number of PMNs is obtained by the limited amount ofblood that can ethical ly be drawn from any one individual subject.…”
