Neuroprotective Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Areca Catechu Linn on β-Amyloid (25-35) Induced Cognitive Dysfunction in Mice

Abstract: Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia in elderly. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease. But some category of drugs like AchE inhibitors and NMDA antagonists were used along with some antioxidants and some other supportive therapy. There is a possibility to slow down the brain's degeneration caused by Alzheimer's with natural treatments. In the present study animals were divided randomly into five groups of six animals each. Group I animals were given 0.1 % w/v CMC orally by usin… Show more

“…The role of arecoline in increasing the level of acetylcholine in the Central Nervous System (CNS) of animals and AD patients have been fully discussed in the literature (Peng et al, 2015;Volgin et al, 2019). Also, significant neuroprotective activity of hydroalcoholic extract of betel nuts at a dose of 200 mg/kg on Aβ-induced cognitive dysfunction in mice has been reported by Kannan et al (2013). However, other biological activities involved in AD have not been investigated and in this study, they were evaluated.…”

“…Ethanolic extract of arecanut (4-80 mg/kg) inhibits monoamine oxidase in albino rats (64). In mice brain, treatment of 200 and 400 mg/kg hydroalcoholic extract of arecanut reduce MAO level (65). The dichloromethane fraction of arecanut elevates serotonin and dopamine in the brain by inhibiting MAO-A (66).…”

“…The movement of animal interrupts a beam of light falling on a photocell during which a count was recorded and displayed. [15] Cook's pole climbing method The basic operational mode of this method is that following an auditory warning stimulus, the animal learns to avoid the foot shock delivered through the cage floor by jumping to pole. This method has long been accepted as a reliable technique to evaluate learning and memory in experimental animals.…”
