Neuropeptide B and Vaspin as New Biomarkers in Anorexia Nervosa

Abstract: Introduction The aim of the study was to assess the correlation between the levels of neuropeptide B (NPB), neuropeptide W (NPW), vaspin (VAS), and the total antioxidant status (TAS) in the blood, as well as nutritional status of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). Materials and Methods The study covered a cohort of 76 female teenagers, including 46 females with extreme AN and 30 healthy peers (CONTR) aged 12-17. Results AN persons were characterized by higher (in comparison to CONTR) NPB and VAS concentratio… Show more

“…We found that nPB and its receptor are present in rat adipocytes (11) where nPB stimulates lipolysis and suppresses leptin expression, and secretion (11). others have reported that nPB serum level is upregulated in humans who suffer from anorexia nervosa (12), while it is reduced in type 1 diabetic patients (13). overall, these results collectively indicate that the nPB/nPBW1 system is involved in controlling body weight and energy homeostasis and its alternation may contribute to obesity.…”

“…Discussing the contribution of NPB to appetite modulation, it is worth noting that a human study was conducted on circulating NPB in blood in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). Grzelak et al reported that patients who suffer from AN are characterized by lower levels of NPB in the circulation compared to healthy controls, suggesting the use of NPB in diagnosing AN [ 36 ]. Nevertheless, as pointed out in this work, NPB levels were evaluated in only 30 healthy controls and 46 patients with anorexia [ 36 ]; therefore, these results should be interpreted cautiously.…”

Nevertheless, as pointed out in this work, NPB levels were evaluated in only 30 healthy controls and 46 patients with anorexia [ 36 ]; therefore, these results should be interpreted cautiously. The downregulation of circulating NPB levels in patients with anorexia was independently confirmed by a study of 30 healthy controls and 30 patients with AN [ 37 ].…”

“…Some authors emphasise sexual dimorphism of SVC in adults and children. They show that sex is an independent predictor of circulating vaspin in diabetic, obese, and nondiabetic patients, SVC increases with sexual maturation in girls, vaspin secretion is conditioned by nutrition status, and there is significantly higher SVC in female teenagers with anorexia nervosa than in healthy girls and lower in girls with Turner syndrome [23][24][25]. SVC in children with chronic kidney disease is significantly lower than in healthy children [26].…”
