Neuropathic pain characteristics in patients from Curitiba (Brazil) with spinal cord injury

Abstract: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study on patients with spinal cord injuries living in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. The aim was to evaluate the pain characteristics among such patients seen at referral care centers for spinal cord injury patients in Curitiba. A total of 109 adults with spinal cord injury in this city were evaluated regarding the presence of pain, especially neuropathic pain. Neuropathic pain was evaluated using the DN4 questionnaire, a universal instrument that has been translated and valid… Show more

“…Concerning the protection factor for pain syndromes, observed by tetraplegic in this study, in relation to paraplegia, it is embodied that this complication is common among individuals with TRM, and may be classified as musculoskeletal or visceral neuropathic, which may be related to neuro-spasticity phenomena, tissue inflammation or visceral onsets [31][32]. In this context, the intensity of pain refers to disabilities, often more emphatic than the loss of functionality.…”

“…Pain was diagnosed according to DN4 questionnaire in 20 patients. Results have also shown that most affected individuals by this pain were male, young adults with 40 years of age, single or married, retired, with basic education and paraplegic with incomplete injury 9 . In 77% of patients of this series, NP has started up to one year after SCI; 69% in up to six months.…”

“…36 Chronic pain is the complication most related to a lower score in quality of life evaluations. 24 The use of analgesic medication was reported by only 36.4% of the patients, as found in a similar study, 22 in which 35% of the patients used it. However, 54% of the patients used specific medication for pain and spasticity in the Finnerup study.…”

“…22 After an SCI, there are neuroplasticity phenomena, with consequent abnormal neuronal sprouting of the peripheral neurons located in the dorsal column of the spinal cord, resulting in an increase of painful synaptic transmission. 23,24 Musculoskeletal pain is caused by trauma or inflammation of the bone, joint, or muscular tissues, mechanical instability, muscular spasm, or it can be secondary to excessive use. Visceral pain is associated with visceral afflictions, and it is found in deep visceral structures.…”
