Although high levels of fish consumption and bioindicators of mercury exposure have been reported for traditional populations in the Amazon, little is known about their actual daily intake of Hg. Using an ecosystem approach, calculate daily mercury intake in adult fish-eaters, examine the relations between mercury intake and bioindicators of exposure and the factors that influence these relations. A cross-sectional dietary survey on fish and fruit consumption frequency was carried out with 256 persons from six villages of the Tapajo´s River. Fish portion per meal was determined. Mercury concentration was determined for 1123 local fish specimens. Daily mercury intake (mg/kg/day) was determined for men and women from each village using the average fish-mercury concentration for the fish caught in their fishing zone, the average quantity of fish per meal, fish-species frequency consumption and participants' body weight. Fish-mercury averaged 0.33 mg/g70.33. Daily mercury intake varied between 0 and 11.8 mg/kg/day (mean 0.92 mg/kg/day70.89) and varied by gender and village. Mean blood-and hair-mercury were 58.7736.1 mg/l and 17.9711.5 mg/g, respectively. There was a strong and positive relation between blood-mercury and daily mercury intake, with an inverse relation for fruit intake and schooling; significant variations were observed with immigrant status, and among villages. Hair-mercury was directly associated with daily mercury intake and inversely related to schooling and fruit consumption. Fruit consumption modified the relation between daily mercury intake and blood-mercury levels: for the same daily mercury intake, persons eating more fruit had lower blood-mercury concentrations (ANCOVA Interaction term: F ¼ 10.9, Po0.0001). The median difference of the ratio of blood-mercury to daily mercury intake between low and high fruit consumers was 26, representing a 26.3% reduction. These findings reveal high levels of daily mercury intake. Rigorous studies for developing risk-based reference doses in the Amazon should be undertaken to orient viable risk-management strategies to reduce exposure, while maintaining fish diet.

O mercúrio na Amazônia brasileira tem sido estudado devido à ocorrência de garimpo de ouro, que é uma atividade que aumenta a carga do mercúrio neste ecossistema. A forma mais tóxica deste elemento é o metil mercúrio, que é um potente neurotóxico com propriedade de atravessar a barreira placentária e afetar o desenvolvimento do feto com consequências irreversíveis para o recém-nascido.As populações ribeirinhas da Região Amazônica têm como principal fonte de proteína a ingestão de peixe, que dependendo do seu nível trófico podem constituir uma importante fonte de metil-mercúrio para estas populações. Embora atividades como o garimpo tenham diminuído nos últimos anos, os projetos de desenvolvimento, na região Amazônica, podem aumentar os níveis de Hg incorporados na cadeia trófica em forma de metil mercúrio. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a exposição de Hg (matriz sangue e cabelo), na etapa de pré-enchimento do reservatório de uma hidrelétrica no rio Madeira, com foco principal na saúde infantil, em duas comunidades ribeirinhas, localizadas nas áreas de influência direta e indireta da usina hidrelétrica. Environmental context. Dietary intake of fish and other seafood products is the dominant source of human exposure to methylmercury, a toxicant that can have serious adverse effects on the developing nervous system and may promote heart diseases. The existing evidence of human toxicity should inspire prudent choices in maintaining fish intakes to secure an ample supply of essential nutrients, while at the same time choosing species that are low in mercury concentrations. The combination of essential nutrients and avoidance of this toxic contaminant will benefit brain development and human health in general. In addition, current contamination levels suggest that intensified efforts are needed to reduce and eliminate mercury release to the environment.Abstract. Methylmercury (MeHg) is a worldwide contaminant found in seafood and freshwater fish, which constitute the dominant source of human exposure to this substance. The developing human brain is particularly susceptible to injury caused by MeHg, which easily passes the placental barrier. Epidemiological studies in fishing populations have found subtle though lasting adverse effects on brain functions of children who were exposed prenatally to MeHg from seafood diets. This contaminant also seems capable of promoting the development of heart disease. Fish and seafood also contain important nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids that may provide beneficial effects, thereby possibly counteracting or obscuring the adverse effects of MeHg. This article reviews the existing evidence on MeHg developmental neurotoxicity and the emerging evidence that MeHg may promote the development of heart diseases. MeHg risks may have been underestimated in the past, in part because of the confounding effects of nutrients from seafood and fish. Improved control of mercury release to the environment is indicated. In addition, regulatory agencies should provide better guidance to consumers in maintaining a balanced diet that includes seafood as low as possible in mercury.
