Abstract: Agaresuchus fontisensis is an allodaposuchid crocodile from the Campanian–Maastrichtian (Late Cretaceous) of Lo Hueco (Cuenca, Spain). Allodaposuchidae is a clade of European basal eusuchians, which is considered a part of the stem group of Crocodylia. The holotype and paratype skulls of Agaresuchus fontisensis were scanned on computed tomography and their internal cavities, including those of the brain, nerves and blood vessels, as well as the paratympanic sinus system and the paranasal sinuses, digitally rec… Show more

“…Many subsequent studies applied CT scanning to dinosaur cranial material, focusing mainly on both the braincase and bony labyrinth (Knoll et al, 2006(Knoll et al, , 2012Sereno et al, 2007;Witmer and Ridgely, 2009;Neenan et al, 2019;King et al, 2020;Sakagami and Kawabe, 2020). Recently, an increasing number of studies have focused on the rostral neurovascular anatomy of extant (e.g., Witmer et al, 2008;Leitch and Catania, 2012;Porter andWitmer, 2015, 2016;Jones et al, 2019;Lessner et al, 2019;Lessner and Holliday, 2020) and extinct amniote taxa, including therapsids (Benoit et al, 2016a(Benoit et al, , 2016b(Benoit et al, , 2017b(Benoit et al, , 2019Pusch et al, 2019;Wallace et al, 2019;Pusch et al, 2020;Benoit et al, 2021b;Ekdale and Deméré, 2021), plesiosaurs (Foffa et al, 2014), and archosauromorphs (Lessner et al, 2016;Lessner and Stocker, 2017;Serrano-Martínez et al, 2020;Benoit et al, 2021a), including theropod dinosaurs (Ibrahim et al, 2014(Ibrahim et al, , 2014Barker et al, 2017;Cau, 2020;Cerroni et al, 2020;Porter and Witmer, 2020;Kawabe and Hattori, 2021).…”

“…This morphology is most similar to A . figarii and contrasts with that of many other sampled crocodyliforms, in which the olfactory tract is long and narrow (Herrera et al, 2013; Pierce et al, 2017; Serrano‐Martínez et al, 2019, 2019b, 2020; Sertich & O'Connor, 2014).…”

“…colberti is particularly intriguing because there has been a marked increase in studies exploring the evolution of soft tissue structures within the endocranium of crocodylomorphs and their close relatives (e.g., Bona et al, 2017; Bronzati et al, 2021; Erb & Turner, 2021; Holliday et al, 2020; Holloway et al, 2013; Kley et al, 2010; Lautenschlager & Butler, 2016; Lessner & Stocker, 2017; Nesbitt et al, 2017; Pierce et al, 2017). Those studies documented key patterns in crocodylomorph endocranial anatomy, such as broad changes in endocast morphology, modifications of semicircular canal shape related to habitat, and the expansion of cranial pneumatization (Bronzati et al, 2021; Brusatte et al, 2016; Erb & Turner, 2021; Fonseca et al, 2020; Herrera et al, 2018; Kley et al, 2010; Lautenschlager & Butler, 2016; Leardi et al, 2020; Pierce et al, 2017; Porter et al, 2016; Schwab et al, 2020; Serrano‐Martínez et al, 2019, 2019b, 2020; Sertich & O'Connor, 2014; Watanabe et al, 2019). Given its hypothesized placement near the base of Crocodyliformes, E .…”

“…In fact, young researchers are taking the lead in research with new scientific approaches (e.g. Falkingham et al, 2018;Lefebvre et al, 2020;Manafzadeh and Gatesy, 2020;Bailleul et al, 2021;Nieto et al, 2021;Serrano-Martínez et al, 2021;Van Bijlert et al, 2021;Ma et al, 2022;Wiemann et al, 2022). Young scientists are the key to bringing new perspectives into science and pushing technological and methodological developments.…”
