In vehicular communication networks, to facilitate the variety of intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications, handover management is considered as the one of the most challenging research issues. The most compatible and interoperable handover management solutions are designed based on IP mobility protocols. However, due to the unique characteristics of vehicles such as high velocity, IP mobility management protocols are still unacceptable for ITS real-time applications that are sensitive to network latencies. Thus, whenever the vehicle roams between two domains, which is most likely to occur in vehicular networks, its reachability status will be broken-down causing high handover latency and inevitable traffic loss. Recently, proxy mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) has been proposed to support the mobility management without any intervention of the mobile user in the mobility-related signaling. As PMIPv6 will be deployed in the wireless technologies for next generation networks (i.e., LTE/LTE-advanced, WiFi and WiMAX), vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are expected to employ PMIPv6 protocol in vehicle to infrastructure connection as well. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive review of the state of the art of PMIPv6 handover management in VANET. We present a new taxonomy and classify the existing schemes according to different considerations. Finally, we outline several open issues and handoff management design considerations as a direction for future research.

Proxy Mobile IPV6 (PMIPV6) is a network-based mobility management protocol, designed to keep track of individual mobile node's movement. So a mobile node can easily roam in PMIPV6 network without changing it's IP address. Network Mobility-Basic Support Protocol (NEMO-BSP), based on MIPV6, is the protocol designed for mobility management of NEMO in MPIV6 network. But NEMO-BSP cannot be directly used in PMIPV6 due to differences in the underlying protocols. To make PMIPV6 as a complete mobility management protocol, functionality of PMIPV6 should be enhanced to support network mobility in PMIPV6. This work enhances functionality of PMIPV6 and NEMO-BSP protocols and proposes a new architecture called NEMO supported PMIPV6 that supports movement of mobile nodes as well as network mobility in PMIPV6 network.

The recent rapid proliferation of mobile devices has significantly increased the importance of network mobility (NEMO) technology for Internet access, which enables all the nodes within a mobile network to provide session continuity when the mobile network moves. This paper proposes an efficient network mobility support scheme with direct home network prefix (HNP) assignment to reduce the location update cost and packet tunneling cost. In the proposed scheme, the moving mobile access gateway (mMAG), instead of the local mobility anchor (LMA), assigns a mobile node (MN)'s HNP using a sub-prefix of its own HNP when an MN is attached to the mMAG. An IP address swapping mechanism is used to deliver the packets destined for MNs moved to the mMAG without an additional tunnel header. In the proposed scheme, the mMAG also performs a location update on behalf of the MNs. Therefore, the proposed scheme can reduce both the location update cost and the packet tunneling cost. Numerical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing schemes in terms of the total cost, throughput, and signaling overhead.
