“…As for antibacterial agents, piperacillin‐tazobactam and vancomycin were frequently reported to be associated with AKI. Piperacillin‐tazobactam alone has rarely been reported to be associated with AKI, whereas the association of vancomycin alone with AKI has been reported . However, vancomycin in combination with piperacillin‐tazobactam was associated with a greater risk of AKI than vancomycin with or without β‐lactam .…”

“…AKI, acute kidney injury DRUG reported to be associated with AKI, 21 whereas the association of vancomycin alone with AKI has been reported. 22,23 However, vancomycin in combination with piperacillin-tazobactam was associated with a greater risk of AKI than vancomycin with or without β-lactam. 24 Clinically, the combination of piperacillin-tazobactam and vancomycin is often used, and so it is noteworthy that their combined use increased the risk.…”

“…Nephrotoxicity was defined as a ≥50% increase of the serum creatinine level from baseline, defined as before starting this combined regimen. Patients with acute renal failure were classified using the RIFLE criteria (Risk of renal dysfunction, Injury to the kidney, Failure of kidney function, Loss of kidney function and End‐stage kidney disease), which are highly sensitive for diagnosis of vancomycin‐associated acute renal failure , and have a good prognostic value .…”

“…This study is the first large scale investigation of VA-AKI in Hong Kong. In previous studies, the incidence of VA-AKI in Chinese varied from 2.4 to 45% [9,[13][14][15][16] (Additional file 1: Table S1). The difference of estimated incidence is due to different populations, sample sizes, inclusion criteria and AKI definition.…”
