Neoplastic Multifocal Skin Lesions: Biology, Etiology, and Targeted Therapies for Nonmelanoma Skin Cancers

Abstract: Neoplastic skin lesions are multifocal, diffuse skin infiltrations of particular relevance in the differential diagnosis of ulcerative, nodular, or crusting skin lesions. Nonmelanoma skin cancers (NMSCs), namely, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and also actinic keratosis (AK), are the most common malignant tumors in humans. BCCs do not proliferate rapidly and most of the times do not metastasize, while SCCs are more infiltrative, metastatic, and destructive. AKs are precursor lesions… Show more

“…Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is known as the most common cancer of skin with a good prognosis, mainly caused by photogenic mutations in patched homolog 1 (PTCH1) gene (Bukhardt Pérez, Ruiz‐Villaverde, Naranjo Díaz, Blasco Melguizo, & Naranjo, ; Fernandes et al, ; Helsing, Gjersvik, & Tarstedt, ; Lear, Harvey, Berker, Strange, & Fryer, ). BCC is followed by clinical manifestations in middle adulthood such as telangiectasia, pigmented areas, rodent ulcer and red patch (Elghissassi et al, ; Marzuka & Book, ).…”

“…Although chemotherapeutic drugs in general are effective in destroying neoplastic cells, the major challenge is the distinction between neoplastic and normal cells. This lack of specificity of chemotherapeutic drugs is a serious limiting factor, due to several adverse effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, alopecia and greater risk of serious infections [ 3 , 4 ].…”
