Abstract: To identify, through a systematic literature review, the characteristics of neoplasm seeding in biopsy performed on the musculoskeletal system. We performed a search on PubMed, MEDLINE, LILACS and SciELO from August to October 2010. We included articles that addressed the neoplasm seeding in biopsy performed on the musculoskeletal system. The search was limited to English, Spanish and Portuguese as publication languages, but it was not limited by year of publication. We retrieved 2858 articles, but only seven … Show more

“…Although resection of the biopsy tract is recommended by numerous authors [5,13,14], neither we nor Oliveira et al [20] could find a study that definitively confirmed the frequency of biopsy tract seeding or that there is increased risk of local recurrence when the biopsy tract is not resected.…”

“…Guidelines recommend biopsy tract resection in the definitive surgery to achieve complete elimination of malignant cells [5,13,14]. To our knowledge, and as reported by Oliveira et al [20], contamination of the tract and the factors that can affect seeding have not been reported. We detected contamination with tumoral cells in 12% of the biopsy tracts.…”

“…Surgeon preference dictates whether the biopsy tract is excised at the time of definitive surgery; data is not definitive as to whether resection of the biopsy tract affects recurrence. 16 The patient should also be referred to pediatric oncology for evaluation and initiation of appropriate neoadjuvant chemotherapy.…”

“…By either approach, the length of time between IMRT and HDR brachytherapy is likely to be important, as tumor cell repopulation may occur during delays in sequential therapy. Regardless, prostate cancer seeding appears to be an extraordinarily rare event, especially relative to other malignancies, and firm recommendations concerning the temporal sequence of brachytherapy and external beam radiation for prostate cancer cannot be made (9).…”
