Nematode diversity patterns in mangroves: a review of environmental drivers at different spatial scales

Abstract: Mangroves are among the most productive ecosystems on Earth, yet they are disappearing at a dramatic rate.Mangrove sediments harbor microscopic nematodes, which show specific responses to variations of sediment physicochemical conditions, thus being potential bioindicators for conservation purposes. Nematode communities are subject to the strong heterogeneity of mangroves and predicting their distribution remains laborious at global and regional scale, thus hampering final statements about bioindication. In th… Show more

“…Species and functional β-diversity were characterized by substantial variability within sites that derived in broad 0.95 confidence intervals and lack of differences among sites. In general, small-scale heterogeneity of the substrate promotes nematode β-diversity in a variety of environments such as deep sea [72], lakes [73], and mangroves [74]. These findings fit theoretical considerations about the enhancing effects of habitat complexity and spatial heterogeneity on biodiversity [75].…”

“…Understanding the metacommunity structures of soil nematodes is essential for maintaining coexistence and comprehending the spatial pattern of soil nematodes (Daly et al., 2021; Spedicato et al., 2023). In this study, the main objectives were to discover the metacommunity structures of soil nematodes and their construction mechanism among three typical land covers (i.e., farmland, grassland and woodland) at the local and regional scales.…”
