Background. While recent studies have found problem-solving impairments in individuals who engage in deliberate self-harm (DSH), few studies have examined repeaters and non-repeaters separately. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether specific types of problem-solving are associated with repeated DSH.Method. As part of the WHO/EURO Multicentre Study on Suicidal Behaviour, 836 medically treated DSH patients (59 % repeaters) from 12 European regions were interviewed using the European Parasuicide Study Interview Schedule (EPSIS II) approximately 1 year after their index episode. The Utrecht Coping List (UCL) assessed habitual responses to problems.Results. Factor analysis identified five dimensions -Active Handling, Passive-Avoidance, Problem Sharing, Palliative Reactions and Negative Expression. Passive-Avoidance -characterized by a pre-occupation with problems, feeling unable to do anything, worrying about the past and taking a gloomy view of the situation, a greater likelihood of giving in so as to avoid difficult situations, the tendency to resign oneself to the situation, and to try to avoid problems -was the problem-solving dimension most strongly associated with repetition, although this association was attenuated by self-esteem.Conclusions. The outcomes of the study indicate that treatments for DSH patients with repeated episodes should include problem-solving interventions. The observed passivity and avoidance of problems (coupled with low self-esteem) associated with repetition suggests that intensive therapeutic input and follow-up are required for those with repeated DSH.

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to validate the Life Events Questionnaire (Cuestionario de Sucesos Vitales, CSV). Two large and independent samples were used (age range 19 to 67 years). A protocol including the CSV, the PANAS Scales, the DSM-5 Self-Rated Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure−Adult, the Anxiety Scale (EA), the Depression Questionnaire (CD), and the Health Questionnaire (CS) was completed on two separate occasions (with a 6-month interval). Exploratory and confi rmatory factor analyses revealed a 7-factor structure of the CSV, suggesting seven stress-relevant psychosocial domains. Scores on the questionnaire were predictive of elevated levels of psychopathology, anxiety, depression, and diseases assessed 6 months later, after controlling for the effect of negative and positive affectivity, age and gender. Evidence of reliability, normative data, and validity of the CSV is also reported. We conclude that the CSV provides a suitable measure for psychosocial stress assessment.Keywods: Life Events Questionnaire; CSV; psychosocial stress; negative life events; psychopathology; anxiety; depression; disease.Resumen: El objetivo del estudio fue validar el Cuestionario de Sucesos Vitales (CSV). Se utilizaron dos muestras amplias e independientes (rango de edad: 19-67 años). Se aplicó un protocolo en dos momentos temporales (separados por 6 meses) que incluía el CSV, las escalas PANAS de afecto positivo y negativo, el DSM-5 Self-Rated Level 1 Cross-Cutting Symptom Measure−Adult), la Escala de Ansiedad (EA), el Cuestionario de Depresión (CD), y el Cuestionario de Salud (CS). Los análisis factoriales exploratorios y confi rmatorios revelaron una estructura de 7 factores que sugieren siete dimensiones psicosociales relevantes al estrés. El CSV predijo las puntuaciones en psicopatología, ansiedad, depresión y enfermedades, evaluadas 6 meses más tarde, tras controlar el efecto de la afectividad negativa y positiva, la edad y el género. También se proporciona evidencia de fi abilidad, datos normativos y validez del CSV.
