Natural tuning: towards a proof of concept

Abstract: The cosmological constant problem and the absence of new natural physics at the electroweak scale, if confirmed by the LHC, may either indicate that the nature is finetuned or that a refined notion of naturalness is required. We construct a family of toy UV complete quantum theories providing a proof of concept for the second possibility. Low energy physics is described by a tuned effective field theory, which exhibits relevant interactions not protected by any symmetries and separated by an arbitrary large ma… Show more

“…This expression reduces to the Nambu-Goto result (6.10) in the limit m → 0, as can be checked using the fact that 3 F 2 → 1 when its argument vanishes. Finally, we remark that the CDD factor deformation of a free massive boson theory was considered in [20], where the first two orders of the perturbed action were constructed by a direct diagrammatic analysis, in perfect agreement with (6.34), which generalizes this result to all orders and to a generic potential.…”

“…The phase shift for this process is simply are the momenta of right and left-moving particles, respectively, and M i , M j fix the relative energy scales. The CDD factor (1.2) was introduced in [20] as a generalization of the proposal of [6] to theories with more than one particle species. It was first pointed out in [9] that this deformation corresponds to perturbing the CFT theory with a series of irrelevant operators whose leading term is TT.…”

“…This minimal model has some interest also in relation to the hierarchy problem of the Fermi scale, if one assumes that gravity does not influence its radiative stability, like proposed in [2,3] and recently reelaborated upon in [4,6]. In fact values of M χ ≤ 3 TeV would imply a fine-tuning in the Higgs mass value at a level of 10% or better [6], more precisely M χ < 1.0 TeV× √ ∆, with ∆ the amount of fine-tuning.…”

“…Very recently, as a proof of concept in 2D, a new class of gravity theories was constructed [47] which cannot be described with a local Lagrangian in the UV. In those theories no new particles can be associated with the scale where the classical theory is superseded, in agreement with the absence of their contributions to the cosmological constant.…”
