Abstract: Objective: In this study, we aimed to describe the influence of natural terpenes on the antimycobacterial activity of first-line tuberculostatic drugs against isolated Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Materials and Methods: The natural terpenes used in this study were R-limonene, S-limonene, myrcene, sabinene, α-pinene, and β-elemene. The values of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for these terpenes, as well as for combinations of terpenes with tuberculostatic antibiotics (ethambutol, isoniazid, and rifam… Show more

“…The results of this study show no activity of β-elemene against tested bacteria with exception of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra. What is more, only our previous work [ 32 ], together with this study, describe the influence of β-elemene on Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium smegmatis . The investigated earlier, isolated strain of M. tuberculosis was more sensitive to β-elemene action than that used in the current study H37Ra reference strain; however, the activity of this compound against M. tuberculosis is still noticeable, making β-elemene worthy f further testing.…”

“…A mixture of the monoterpenes γterpinene, 1S-α-pinene, β-pinene and β-myrcene produced by Collimonas pratensis inhibited growth of S. aureus and E. coli [44]. Additionally, essential oil components such as limonene, sabinene, α-pinene, thymol and carvacrol have been shown to have potential as enhancers of anti-tuberculosis drugs like ethambutol, rifampicin and isoniazid [45].…”

“…Meanwhile, terpenes play an immunomodulatory role during early stages of M. tuberculosis infection and phagosomal maturation [106][107][108] . Recently, terpene products unique to M. tuberculosis expressed on the cell membrane surface were discovered 109 and others show potential as agonists of antibiotics for TB treatment 110 , underscoring the importance of understanding their metabolism. Identifying products that metabolize virulence and antibiotic resistance components should accelerate advancements in understanding and treating M. tuberculosis.…”
