Natural killer activity of blood lymphocytes in patients with primary intracranial tumors. Correlation to histological tumor type and anatomical site

Cell-mediated cytotoxicity in glioma-bearing patients: Differential responses of peripheral blood mononuclear cells to stimulation with interleukin-2 and microbial antigen

“…Corticosteroids are well known for their immunodepressive effects [27] and both corticosteroids and anticonvulsants were shown to inhibit lymphoproliferation when added to PBMC cultures in vitro [8]. Moreover, Ullen et al have recently reported on lower basal NK activity of corticosteroid-treated glioma patients as compared to untreated ones [26]. Nonetheless, several facts argue against the therapeutic treatments explaining our results.…”

“…This inability appears to be unrelated to the level of fresh NK which was widely scattered among our patients (data not shown). Ullen et al [26] had previously demonstrated that fresh NK activity of PBMC from glioma-bearing patients was similar to the NK activity of healthy donors. The PBMC of these patients, however, were able to mount an efficient cytotoxic response against both K562 and glioma cells when I~2 was used as stimulant: in this case the cytotoxic response was of the same order of magnitude as the one that IL-2 (or GMP) could generate in normal subjects.…”

Nine of the sixteen patients tested had normal numbers of CD56+ lymphocytes and in the others, the proportions were below the normal range.…”
