Natural Frequency Changes due to Severe Corrosion in Metallic Structures

Abstract: Degradation of engineering structures due to corrosion affects their safety by reducing the cross-section of structural components and altering the material's mechanical characteristics. These parameter changes are observable in the shift of the natural frequencies. In the study presented in this paper, it was demonstrated that the kinetic energy distribution reflects the mass participation, thus being able to predict frequency changes due to mass loss, while the modal strain energy distribution can be properl… Show more

“…The effects of various defects on the vibration characteristics of structures and rotor systems have always been of great significance among researchers, and related works are reported in the literature. Gillichet al [ 20 ] developed two kinds of mathematical relations for predicting frequency changes due to the two main effects of corrosion—loss of mass and decrease in stiffness. Shekar and Prabhu [ 21 ] studied the effect of coupling misalignments on the vibration characteristics of a rotor-bearing system.…”

“…In previous research [15][16][17][18], the authors developed robust techniques for assessing transverse or complex-shaped cracks for beams and plates, regardless of the structure's boundary conditions. All these techniques are based on the natural frequency shifts and evaluate the severity by energetic methods.…”
