Natural cell-mediated cytotoxic activity in the peripheral blood of patients with atopic dermatitis

Abstract: Ten patients with atopic dermatitis and ten healthy control subjects, matched for age, sex, and skin color, were studied for their peripheral blood natural cell-mediated cytotoxic activity against K-562 human leukemia cell line target cells, using the sodium chromate Cr 51 release assay. There was a great reduction in the natural cytotoxic activity of the patients with atopic dermatitis compared with that of their respective control subjects; the patients with atopic dermatitis had a mean value of 41.9 alpha +… Show more

“…Because of the known susceptibility of patients with atopic dermatitis to herpes simplex virus and to vaccinia infection, we have previously investigated NK cell function in patients with atopic dermatitis and demonstrated a reduction in NK cell activity by comparison with an age and sex matched non atopic control group [1] thus confirming the work of Kusiami and Trentin [2]. Disease activity in patients with atopic dermatitis tends to fluctuate with periods of both remission and fiare.…”

“…Natural killer cell activity may be directly related to the atopic state. Kusiami and Trentin [2] also found reduction in NK cell activity in two young adults with allergic rhinitis. This raised the possibility that the atopic state in general may alter NK cell function.…”

“…The reduction of the NK cell activity was more remarkable in severe than in mild cases. These results are consistent with previous findings (8)(9)(10). Jansen et al suggested that the NK cell activity in patients with AD might be suppressed by activated macrophages (10).…”

“…Recently, several studies have indicated that patients with AD show a decrease of natural killer (NK) cell activity (8)(9)(10)(11). However, the precise mechanism decreasing this activity has not been fully analyzed.…”

“…Previous studies of NK-cell function in patients with this disease have given conflicting results. Kusaimi and Trentin (1982) also found a reduction in NK-cell function in ten adult patients (eight female), mean age 30, as compared with ten normal age-and sex-matched controls. They used the same target cell, K562, and the same 4-hr incubation period.…”
