The aim of this work is to study the physical-chemical, mechanical, and biocompatible properties of hydroxyapatite obtained by hydrothermal synthesis, at relatively low temperatures and high pressures, starting from natural sources (Rapana whelk shells), knowing that these properties influence the behavior of nanostructured materials in cells or tissues. Thus, hydroxyapatite nanopowders were characterized by chemical analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In vitro studies on osteoblast cell lines (cytotoxicity and cell proliferation), as well as preliminary mechanical tests, have been performed. The results showed that the obtained powders have a crystallite size below 50 nm and particle size less than 100 nm, demonstrating that hydrothermal synthesis led to hydroxyapatite nanocrystalline powders, with a Ca:P ratio close to the stoichiometric ratio and a controlled morphology (spherical particle aggregates). The tensile strength of HAp samples sintered at 1100 °C/90 min varies between 37.6–39.1 N/mm2. HAp samples sintered at 1300 °C/120 min provide better results for the investigated mechanical properties. The coefficient of friction has an appropriate value for biomechanical applications. The results of cell viability showed that the cytotoxic effect is low for all tested samples. Better cell proliferation is observed for osteoblasts grown on square samples.

Infections cause significant complications in surgical cases involving fractures and implants. Biomaterials, particularly bioactive glass, are known for their biocompatibility and tissue regeneration potential. The integration of bactericidal properties with bioactive glasses could prove pivotal in preventing infections during bone and wound regeneration. The LZS (Li2O–ZrO2–Si2O) glass system, recognized for its potential for bone regeneration via scaffolds, is a candidate for further exploration of its antimicrobial capabilities. This study evaluated the antimicrobial properties of LZS bioactive glass and glass‐ceramic against various pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella enteritidis) using the spread‐plate method. The LZS glass exhibited antibacterial effects against all the tested microorganisms, with minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) varying between 50 and 150 mg/mL. The bactericidal effects of the biomaterials were attributed to ion release from the glass matrix, which increased the pH of the solution and effectively eliminated microorganisms. In addition, this study found no evidence of DNA damage, and the LZS systems exhibited no cytotoxic or genotoxic effects at the tested concentrations. The results showed that the investigated antibacterial glass and glass‐ceramic have potential applications in bone regeneration or wound healing, especially in scenarios where bacterial proliferation is a concern.

Fishbone comprising hydroxyapatite (bio-ceramic) is regularly viewed as a natural resource for biological and pharmaceutical applications. In this study, hydroxyapatite has been prepared from shbone waste using thermal calcination method. The composite hydroxyapatite-montmorillonite-sodium alginate was synthesized by co-precipitation method. Various functional groups of biocomposite were characterised using Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction studies were exhibited the thermal stability and crystallinity of biocomposite respectively. The morphological surface of composites was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The synthesized composite was designed to study the enhanced biological potential such as antibacterial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, drug loading and the drug releasing ability. Antioxidant and anti-diabetic analysis of composite were studied using Phosphomolybdenum and α-Amylase inhibitory method respectively. The drug releasing ability of compounds (Doxorubicin and Curcumin) were investigated by UV-spectrophotometry method at different pH medium (pH = 5.5, 6.8 and 7.4). Additionally, In-vitro kinetic studies were carried out on composite to determine the drug releasing ability of doxorubicin and curcumin.
