Nanomechanical and Material Properties of Fluorine-Doped Tin Oxide Thin Films Prepared by Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis: Effects of F-Doping

Abstract: Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) thin films were deposited on glass substrates using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) at a fixed substrate temperature of 400 °C and various Fluorine/Tin (F/Sn) atomic ratios of 0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0. Effects of F/Sn atomic ratios on structural-morphological, compositional, electrical, optical, and nanomechanical properties of the FTO thin films were systematically studied. The FTO films exhibited a tetragonal structure with preferred orientations of (110), (200), and (211), and po… Show more

“…Nanoindentation is a versatile technique ubiquitously used to obtain the basic mechanical parameters, such as the hardness and elastic modulus, as well as to delineate the deformation mechanisms, creep and fracture behaviors of various nanostructured materials [15][16][17][18] and thin films [19][20][21][22][23] with very high sensitivity and excellent resolution. On the other hand, wettability is an important property of a solid surface, which is intimately related to the chemical compositions and morphology of the surface [24].…”

“…The grain sizes ( D ) of the samples were estimated by using the Scherrer equation: D = 0.9 λ/β cos θ , where λ , β , and θ are the X-ray wavelength, full width at half maximum of the anatase phase TiO 2 (004)-oriented peak, and Bragg diffraction angle, respectively [50]. Clearly, the estimated grain size varied in a narrow range between 21.3 nm and 24.7 nm, and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the (004) peak remained almost constant (Figure 1b).…”

“…In addition, both TNAs and TNWs/TNAs had a pure anatase phase with (101) and (112) dominant preferred orientations (Figure 3d). By using the Scherer formula for the (101) peak [78], the calculated grain sizes of the TNAs and TNWs/TNAs were 32.8 nm and 27.3 nm, respectively.…”
