O processo de limpeza da indústria de laticínios gera elevados volumes de efluente, chegando-se a produzir 10 L de efluente por litro de leite processado. A água do primeiro enxágue pode arrastar de 1% a 3% de sólidos de leite, representando custos de produção. A ultrafiltração pode ser utilizada para recuperar estes sólidos, visando reinseri-los no processo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar o processo de ultrafiltração utilizando-se duas membranas com diferentes geometrias (tubular e espiral), em diferentes condições de pressão e velocidade tangencial, para recuperar e concentrar estes sólidos do leite, buscando obter um composto lácteo passível de ser reutilizado. O processo foi avaliado e otimizado utilizando-se uma água de enxágue modelo (1,7 g.L-1 de leite em pó integral diluído em água potável), alimentada por um sistema de ultrafiltração tangencial, variando-se a pressão (98; 196 e 294 kPa para ambas as membranas) e a velocidade tangencial (0,79; 1,42; 2,23 m.s-1 para a membrana tubular e 0,15; 0,27; 0,44 m.s-1 para a membrana espiral), por meio de um planejamento fatorial 3². Usou-se como variáveis de resposta o fluxo permeado e as concentrações de proteína, óleos e graxas, lactose, fósforo e cálcio do permeado, bem como a Demanda Química de Oxigênio (DQO). A condição experimental otimizada para a membrana tubular foi obtida com a pressão de 294 kPa (elevando a rejeição de lactose, obtendo-se 562 mg.L-1 deste composto no permeado) e a velocidade tangencial de 2,23 m.s-1 (elevando o fluxo permeado, obtendo-se 93,2 kg.m- 2.h-1, e reduzindo a concentração de óleos e graxas para 39 mg.L-1 no permeado). Quanto à membrana espiral, a pressão e a velocidade tangencial exerceram efeito somente sobre o fluxo permeado (obtendo-se 34,8 kg.m- 2.h-1), não havendo efeito significativo sobre as demais variáveis de resposta. O processo realizado com essa membrana foi otimizado com a pressão de 294 kPa e 0,44 m.s-1. A rejeição de ambas as membranas foi superior a 70% para a DQO, 94% para proteínas e acima de 85% para gordura. A concentração da água de enxágue foi realizada com a membrana espiral, reduzindo-se o seu volume inicial em 34 vezes. O concentrado lácteo foi obtido com 2,3% de sólidos totais, 1,1% de proteínas e 0,9% de gordura. A ultrafiltração demonstrou ser um processo viável para a recuperação de sólidos lácteos na indústria de laticínios.

-This paper evaluates the pore blocking mechanism of two ultrafiltration membranes with different geometries (tubular and spiral wound) when dairy wash water is filtered. The work evaluated the effect of transmembrane pressure and the cross-flow velocity with a 3 2 experimental design using classical Hermia's models and the resistance-in-series model. The resistance-in-series analysis identified external fouling on the surface of both membranes, but the tubular membrane showed higher reversible fouling, while the reversible and irreversible resistances of the spiral wound membrane averaged 41% and 45%, respectively. Cake formation is the model that best represents ultrafiltration in the spiral wound membrane at all transmembrane pressures and cross-flow velocities. In the tubular membrane, at the lowest cross-flow velocity (0.79 m.s -1 ), the cake formation model fitted the experimental data best. However, at higher cross-flow velocities (1.42 and 2.23 m.s -1 ), the best fit of flux data was obtained with the complete pore blocking model. In addition, the tubular membrane apparently had a two-step pore blocking: "pore blocking" as the initial governing mechanism followed by "cake formation".

Background and purpose: Excessive amount of heavy metals in industrial wastewater is a seriously crucial issue and requires efficient methods to be introduced and dealt with. Meanwhile, steel making plants as productive units in every country release large amounts of fluid into surface and underground sources. Typically, this wastewater contains heavy metals in minor amounts, while this amount could cause severe damages to the living organisms. Materials and methods: In this study, removing iron, manganese, zinc and total dissolved solid in a typical wastewater resulted from steel making plant was considered using reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes. At first, different pH values and operating pressures were applied to the wastewater. Then, these parameters were evaluated for a wastewater only containing iron to compare the interaction of other elements in iron removal. Results:The results indicated that RO and NF membranes could successfully treat industrial wastewater containing several heavy metals with high concentrations of Fe, Zn and Mn, especially at optimum pH and pressure. Moreover, the interaction of other heavy metals and components in the influent decreased the efficiency of RO but improved the NF efficiency to remove iron. To have a better image, a formula was proposed for each method to represent the influence of the parameters on removal rates. Finally, cost estimation for both procedures showed that RO was not economicallytechnically efficient in comparison with NF. Conclusion: NF showed an acceptable performance with high water flow which made it more suitable for industries. At the end, the relative cost analysis showed that even if the initial price of NF is high, the energy consumption and total cost of RO will be higher.
