Nanofibers Fabricated Using Triaxial Electrospinning as Zero Order Drug Delivery Systems

Abstract: ABSTRACT:A new strategy for creating functional tri-layer nanofibers through triaxial electrospinning is demonstrated. Ethyl cellulose (EC) was used as the filament-forming matrix in the outer, middle, and inner working solutions, and was

“…This is in line with current trends which encourage the provision of efficient outpatients' services which can be controlled digitally and remotely (McLean et al, 2013). The demand for versatile and adjustable manufacturing technologies that are capable of overcoming the rigidity and the high cost of traditional manufacturing methods of individualised oral tablets for a limited number of patients is also rising (Yang et al, 2016;Yu et al, 2015). Unlike conventional tablet compression methods, 3D Printing technologies are capable of fabricating small number of dosage forms, reduce the number of steps and experienced operators involved in manufacturing, and eliminate the need for designated and expensive facilities (Skowyra et al, 2015).…”

“…Solventbased electrospinning has been found to be an excellent method also for the preparation of solid dispersions due to the fast and, thus, very efficient amorphization of the drug enclosed in the fibers owing a large surface area Yu et al, 2009). Although various modifications have been published in respect to the ES setup related mostly to the spinneret (e.g., needleless (Molnár and Nagy, 2016), side-by-side or multiaxial electrospinning (Illangakoon et al, 2015;Yang et al, 2016;Yu et al, 2015)), the challenge of increasing the productivity of ES could not have been addressed considering the high output of other fiber formation techniques such as melt blowing (Balogh et al, 2015b). Recent efforts for scaling up of ES combine the electrostatic field with another fiber formation force such as centrifugal force at low (Lomov and Molnár, 2015) and high (Nagy et al, 2015) frequencies, or a blow of air (Balogh et al, 2015c).…”

“…Although the electrospinning (ES) is fast developing with appearance of tri-axial, coaxial, side-by-side and their combination processes [19][20][21][22] the most common and facile ES equipment is the single needle apparatus [23,24]. The single needle electrospinning (SNES) applies a syringe filled with a polymerdrug containing solution, which is then forced through a nozzle attached to high voltage.…”
