Nanoceria synthesis in the KCl‐LiCl salt system: Crystal formation and properties

Abstract: Nanoceria is an important function material and is widely used in catalytic applications due to its excellent redox properties. Here, we report a simple method to synthesize uniform polyhedral nanoceria powder by the KCl‐LiCl molten salt method. TEM micrographs of the product showed that polyhedral nanoceria particles of 30 nm average size were obtained from cerium carbonate hydroxide when treated at 600°C for 4 hours. Results indicated that the crystal structure broke down to ceria crystal nuclei in the molte… Show more

“…As the reaction of C, Ti, and Al occurs in the medium of molten salts, their dispersion behavior and reactivity has a significant impact on the reaction product. During the molten salt reaction, metal particles, such as Ti and Al, are dispersed in the salts in the form of nanoclusters . As reported by Zhang et al, the composition of the molten salts has a significant impact on their Lewis acidity and ion types.…”

“…During the molten salt reaction, metal particles, such as Ti and Al, are dispersed in the salts in the form of nanoclusters. 24,[45][46][47] As reported by Zhang et al, 48 the composition of the molten salts has a significant impact on their Lewis acidity and ion types. Consequently, the molten salts can influence the coordination mood and distribution behavior of the metal particles.…”

“…Different band gap also corresponded to the electronic transition, and depended on the methods of synthesis and particle size. 80 The effect of calcined temperatures of nanoceria synthesis resulted in a red shift in the UV-Visible spectra. This phenomenon corresponded to the increase in annealing temperature enhancing the crystalline properties.…”

“…Ce 2 (CO 3 ) 3 •xH 2 O from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A.) was used as the precursor after first milling it to powder with an average particle size of less than 20 μm followed by drying the milled powder at 100 °C for 12 hours to form cerium carbonate hydroxide, CeCO 3 OH, following the procedure reported in the literature [35].…”
