Mutual Coupling Reduction of DRA for MIMO Applications

Abstract: In this paper, A multiple input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna using two Square Dielectric Resonators (SDRs) is introduced. The mutual coupling between the two SDRAs is reduced using two different methods; the first method is based on splitting a spiral slot in the ground plane, then filling the slot with dielectric material, "E.=2.2". The second method is based on inserting a copper parasitic element, having the same shape of the splitted Spiral, between the two SDRAs.  The effect of replacing the copper para… Show more

“…Table 1 summarizes the comparison of the proposed structure with earlier studies. Metasurface shield, spiral resonator, FSS wall and dielectric superstrate are used for isolation in MIMO elements in [5], [9], [11] and [12], respectively. The drawback of these techniques is the increase in the height of overall structure.…”

“…With this compact structure, the measured isolation of 28 dB is realized with a stable radiation pattern for each port and with ECC less than 0.05 over the required band. To Summarize the comparison, the proposed structure is more compact and has fairly good performance in terms of isolation than [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. The designs in [18] and [19] are simple and have almost same measured isolation performance, however, the E-E separation is larger between the elements.…”

“…Shalaby and Sharbiny used two methods to minimize mutual coupling: first, a spiral slot is bisected in the ground plane filled with a dielectric material, and second, a parasitic part made of copper is inserted between the two SDRAs and has the same shape as the splitted-spiral, resulting in a 48.5-dB isolation. 3 Das et al deduced that the back-to-back arrangement of the DRA on a common ground plane realizes better mutual coupling through spatial diversity where isolation was improved by 18 dB using orthogonal modes in all the ports. 4 Using an eight-element, dual-frequency MIMO antenna, Sharawi et al introduced a novel methodology of a reflector module to tilt the radiated beam patterns by 45 and minimize field correlations achieving an ECC of less than 0.17.…”

“…5G will expand wireless broadband services through the high-speed optical fiber communication as the backbone, surpassing mobile internet access towards the internet of things (IoT) and device-to-device communications [10], [11] for many applications such as global positioning system (GPS) [12], radiofrequency (RF) energy harvesting [13] and embedded system [14]. Dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) [15]- [25] has gained extensive attention due to its attractive characteristics and has become the preferred choice for a good radiator since it offers a high radiation efficiency and wider bandwidth. As wireless communication technology evolves, the need to implement the multi-band operation antenna for MIMO applications has increased where many research studies are based on the DRA-MIMO…”
