Mutation in Rice Abscisic Acid2 Results in Cell Death, Enhanced Disease-Resistance, Altered Seed Dormancy and Development

Abstract: Lesion mimic mutants display spontaneous cell death, and thus are valuable for understanding the molecular mechanism of cell death and disease resistance. Although a lot of such mutants have been characterized in rice, the relationship between lesion formation and abscisic acid (ABA) synthesis pathway is not reported. In the present study, we identified a rice mutant, lesion mimic mutant 9150 (lmm9150), exhibiting spontaneous cell death, pre-harvest sprouting, enhanced growth, and resistance to rice bacterial … Show more

“…The negative impact of ABA on SA-mediated defenses has been best studied in Arabidopsis and rice. In these plants, the resistance against pathogen is reduced when the ABA pathway is upregulated and increased when the ABA pathway is downregulated (De Torres-Zabala et al, 2007;Xu et al, 2013;Xiao et al, 2017;Liao et al, 2018). Although the evidence for ABA-SA antagonism is increasing, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood (Cao et al, 2011;Lievens et al, 2017;Xiao et al, 2017).…”

“…RT‐qPCR was carried out using the indicated primers (Table S1) and QuantiTect SYBRÂź Green PCR Kits (Invitrogen). To detect the JA content, enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was carried out as previously reported (Teng et al ; Liao et al ). Significant difference ( P < 0.01) were determined by a one‐way ANOVA.…”

“…Drought stress promoted premature leaf senescence by phytohormone regulatory factors, particularly ABA homeostasis mechanisms (Asad et al, 2019). ABA acts as an important regulator in age-dependent physiological processes from seed germination to leaf senescence (Nambara and Marion-Poll, 2005;Wang et al, 2016;Liao et al, 2018). ABA homeostasis mechanism in ABA-mediated leaf senescence initiates from ABA biosynthesis and catabolism, ABA transport, and ABA signaling receptors (Asad et al, 2019).…”
