Bacterial DNAs are constantly detected in atherosclerotic plaques (APs), suggesting that a combination of chronic infection and inflammation may have roles in AP formation. A series of studies suggested that certain Gram-negative bacteria were able to interact with dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecule-3-grabbing non-integrin [DC-SIGN; cluster of differentiation (CD) 209] or langerin (CD207), thereby resulting in deposition of CD209s at infection sites. We wondered if Proteus mirabilis (a member of Proteobacteria family) could interact with APs through CD209/CD207. In this study, we first demonstrated that CD209/CD207 were also receptors for P. mirabilis that mediated adherence and phagocytosis by macrophages. P. mirabilis interacted with fresh and CD209s/CD207-expressing APs cut from human coronary arteries, rather than in healthy and smooth arteries. These interactions were inhibited by addition of a ligand-mimic oligosaccharide and the coverage of the ligand, as well as by anti-CD209 antibody. Finally, the hearts from an atherosclerotic mouse model contained higher numbers of P. mirabilis than that of control mice during infection-challenging. We therefore concluded that the P. mirabilis interacts with APs in human coronary arteries via CD209s/CD207. It may be possible to slow down the progress of atherosclerosis by blocking the interactions between CD209s/CD207 and certain atherosclerosis-involved bacteria with ligand-mimic oligosaccharides.

C-type lectin receptors are a family of immune response receptors that can bind with a broad repertoire of ligands. It can function as innative immune receptors to surveillance bacteria, fungi, and virus invasions. The expressions of C-type lectin receptors (CLRs) are found in different types of tumors. But the role of C-type lectin receptors in cancer is not fully elucidated. And the underlying mechanisms of CLRs in carcinogenesis and tumor development remained unknown. It is known that CLRs bind to the glycosylated antigen on the cancer cells, regulating cancer cell invasion, migration, and metastasis. Meanwhile, the recognition of tumor glycans by antigen-presenting cells can stimulate antitumor immune response and induce immune tolerance. Also, some types of CLRs can be used as diagnostic markers for tumor cells, suggesting that C-type lectin can function as a new tumor therapeutic target and potential biomarkers. Given the therapeutic potential of CLRs in tumor treatments and the emerging roles of CLR in the tumor hallmarks, the multiple roles of CLRs in cancer were summarized in this review.

Bacterial resistance is a serious global public health problem, affecting different spheres of society, increasing hospital costs and reducing the patient's chances of cure, since antimicrobials are no longer effective in the treatment of infections caused by such bacteria. Over the years, uropathogens, agents that cause urinary tract infections, have shown increasingly high rates of resistance, making it increasingly necessary to determine the susceptibility profile of such microorganisms. From this, the present study aimed to verify the antimicrobial resistance profile of the main uropathogens found in a military hospital in Rio de Janeiro. For the preparation of this study, all ethical principles were obeyed, being approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Pedro Ernesto University Hospital, of the State University of Rio de Janeiro, where 825 positive urine culture reports were used, collected between March 2018 and March 2020. Among the main uropathogens identified, Escherichia coli stood out, totaling 72.9% of cases, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (13%), Proteus mirabilis (5.7%) and Acinetobacter baumannii (2.09%). Such bacteria can also cause the so- called asymptomatic bacteriuria, whose treatment is empirical and based on broad-spectrum antibiotics. By analyzing the susceptibility profile of these microorganisms, it was possible to identify a trend towards the growth of strains resistant to fluoroquinolones and carbapenems. The development of protocols for the rational use of antimicrobials can be a step forward for evidence-based clinical management.
