Murine Lung Tumor Measurement Using Respiratory-Gated Micro-Computed Tomography

Abstract: Serial measurements provided evidence of tumor heterogeneity, an unexpected finding given the uniformity of the initiating genetic event. Micro-CT may become a powerful tool for murine lung cancer research in vivo.

“…Kirsch et al, unpubl.). Similarly, micro-CT imaging of K-ras LA lung tumors revealed both tumor growth and shrinkage within individual mice (Cody et al 2005). These data make it clear that some lung tumors grow quickly, whereas others appear to progress with slower kinetics.…”

“…injection thrice a week for 3 weeks as previously described (15). Mice were subjected to respiratory-gated micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) at the beginning and end of the treatment (26), and they were killed by cervical dislocation within 6 hours of the final scan. During the autopsy, visible lesions were counted on the surfaces of both lungs by investigators (M.W.…”

“…Extrathoracic metastases are rare and occur only at a very late stage of the disease, as in humans with adenocarcinoma (Wislez et al, 2003;Jonhson et al, 2001). The radiological appearance is also very similar to the human disease with multifocal lesions such as nodules with ground glass attenuation (Cody et al, 2005). We are presently using this model to analyze the administration of anticancer drugs via the airways.…”
