Multivariate analysis of the adoption of cacao productive technologies: Evidence from a case study in Colombia

Abstract: <p>Multivariate and ordered Probit models were used to study the determinants of the adoption and extent of adoption of agronomic practices among cacao farmers in Nariño, Colombia, with data from 353 farmers in the mountain region. Results suggest that farmers’ adoption decisions are made on a joint basis, further validating the use of a multivariate approach. The presence of illegal crops creates strong disincentives that affect the possibility of more significant technological improvements. Adequate ac… Show more

“…It extends some literature on these issues in Africa (Ehiakpor et al, 2021;Ojo and Baiyegunhi, 2020;Wainaina et al, 2016;Ward et al, 2018) and Asia (Khan et al, 2021;among others), and in crops such as maize (Ehiakpor et al, 2021;Wainaina et al, 2016) and cacao (Martínez and Martínez Pachón, 2021). It reduces the lack of knowledge of the complementarities that agricultural practices may offer farmers in Latin America (Martínez and Martínez Pachón, 2021) and in crops such as rice (Ojo and Baiyegunhi, 2020). Therefore this article sheds light on which combinations of agricultural activities are connected with increasing rice yields of small farmers, and in turn contribute to food security and poverty reduction.…”

“…This study provides some insights on how rice planning in Ecuador can be improved by making complementary decisions. “…Adoption is analyzed to understand how and why farmers use certain technologies and the impact of their implementation, which is essential for researchers and policymakers (Martínez & Pachón, 2021). In this sense, adoption depends on a wide variety of personal, social, and cultural characteristics, economic factors, and innovation aspects (Liu et al, 2018;Yue et al, 2023).…”
