Multiply Broken Metallic Hardware Removal for United Patella Fracture Applied Twenty Years Before: A Case Report

Abstract: Breakage of tension band wires, used to treat the patella fracture, is not uncommon several years after the fracture fixation. Broken wires may migrate to surrounding neurovascular structures, other vital organs like heart and may cause potentially fatal complications. Once the wires have been broken, it is very difficult to remove the broken pieces of metal wires. We report a 50 years old male patient with broken tension band wires at multiple sites for patella fracture. The broken wires were removed 20 years… Show more

“…However, concerns persist regarding potential issues such as soft tissue irritation, breakage of metal wires, and he development of anterior knee pain. 6,7 With the advancement of suture material, suture fixation has emerged as a viable method for treating infrapatellar pole fracture and tendon ruptures. 8 Suture fixation has been associated with minimal soft tissue irritation, lower reoperation rate, and favorable knee range of motion and functional.…”

“…Repetitive loading forces and the strain of both quadriceps and patellar tendon, even after the fracture unites, predispose to wire breakage [1]. There are very few reported cases of patellar wire migration in the literature.…”

“…Various complications can also occur due to the migration of the broken wire. Broken wires may migrate towards the surrounding soft tissue, causing damage to the important neurovascular structures [1]. Migration of the wire to other major organs like the heart can cause potentially fatal complications [2].…”
