Multiple Giant Cell Tumors of Tendon Sheath Found within a Single Digit of a 9-Year-Old

Abstract: Giant cell tumor of tendon sheath is one of the most common soft tissue tumors of the hand. These tumors typically occur in the third or fourth decade of life and present as solitary nodules on a single digit. Currently, the greatest reported number of lesions found within a single digit is five. Although uncommon, giant cell tumor of tendon sheath does occur in the pediatric population. Herein we present a report of a rare case of GCTTS in a child in which seven lesions were identified within a single digit—t… Show more

“…[ 7 , 12 ] GCT-TS is also termed tenosynovial giant cell tumor, pigmented nodular tenosynovitis, xanthogranuloma, benign synovioma, and fibrous xanthoma of synovium. [ 2 , 13 , 14 ] The GCT-TS is a benign but locally aggressive tumor that arises from the synovial membrane of joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae. [ 14 ] Although any joint can be affected, involvement of the TMJ was reported very rarely.…”

“…Localized form is benign and involve the hand and fingers, while diffuse form is more aggressive and occurs in large joints [ 3 ]. GCTTS typically occurs near the distal interphalangeal joint of the index or long finger of the hand [ 4 ]. (see Fig.…”

“…Giant-cell tumor of the tendon sheath is considered the most frequent hand tumor, and it results from a benign proliferation of histiocytes from the joints and peritendinous synovial tissues developing around the tendon sheaths, joint ligaments and joint synovium. 4 12 13 14 15 16 Although there is still some divergence among the researchers, the most accepted etiology is reactive or regenerative hyperplasia associated with inflammation. 5 17 …”

“…Giant-cell tumor of the tendon sheath is more common between the ages of 30 and 50 years, with a female predominance in a ratio of approximately 3:2. 2 3 8 13 14 17 18 It mostly occurs as tumor growths in the hands, mainly in the radial fingers, frequently close to the distal interphalangeal joint. 3 7 8 14 18 19 The tumor favors the flexor aspect of the hand, although the extensor aspect can also be affected.…”
