Multiple chikungunya virus introductions in Lao PDR from 2014 to 2020

Abstract: The first documented chikungunya virus (CHIKV) outbreak in Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) occurred in 2012–2013. Since then, several imported and a few autochthonous cases were identified by the national arbovirus surveillance network. The present study aimed to summarize the main genetic features of the CHIKV strains detected in Lao PDR between 2014 and 2020. Samples from Lao patients presenting symptoms compatible with a CHIKV infection were centralized in Vientiane Capital city for real-time RT-… Show more

“…The E2-L248F from clade I has been reported in Asian lineage sequences from Colombia (2014-2015) and Philippines (2012) 45,46 . Isolates from Thailand, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Cameroon and India also presented the 6K-I54V mutation observed in clade I 44,[47][48][49][50] .…”

“…In Lao PDR, only one CHIKV outbreak was recorded and it was limited to the Champasak province in 2012–2013 [ 23 ]. Since then, four imported cases of CHIKV were recorded in Vientiane capital from French Polynesia, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Thailand between 2014 and 2020 without the detection of local circulation in this province [ 30 ]. Even if no autochthonous CHIKV cases were detected after the detection of these imported cases, this demonstrated the risk of CHIKV introduction in the country due to presence of the potential vectors Ae.…”

“…Indonesia has been the most affected country ( 25 ), followed by Thailand ( 15 ), Malaysia ( 14 , 88 ), the Philippines ( 88–90 ), Cambodia ( 31 , 91 ), and Singapore ( 92 ). While Myanmar ( 17 , 93 ), and Lao PDR ( 20 , 94 ) reported minor outbreaks or sporadic cases, and no available data are available for Vietnam, Brunei and Timor-Leste (the number of cases of the two largest outbreaks per country is reported in Figure 3 ). However, the true burden of CHIKV virus disease remains unknown.…”
