Multi-point optimal design for diffuser cascades of centrifugal compressors

Abstract: The 'multi-point design' approach for single airfoils in aeronautical engineering is introduced into the optimal design for diffuser cascades of centrifugal compressors. Genetic algorithms are used to solve the multi-point problem. The proposed approach is applied to a 'two-point design' of a real diffuser cascade. The numerical results show that a group of optimal blade profiles can be obtained, from which the designer can select performance compromises for the two given design condition points.

“…The centrifugal compressor encompasses an unshroud impeller and a vaned diffuser and uses an external volute to transfer the discharge flow from the impeller and diffuser to the pipe system and to increase the pressure of the flow further. In the design of the small-size centrifugal impeller, the approximation model proposed by Wang 20 is adopted, while the 'multipoint design' approach for single airfoils proposed by Fan 21 is adopted in the design of the vaned diffuser profile. The volute was designed for circumferentially constant angular momentum distribution.…”

“…The optimized cascade airfoil was demonstrated to have improved aerodynamic performance. Fan et al 8 used a multi-point design method for diffuser cascades of centrifugal compressors by solving the flow loss coefficients with a GA. A GA incorporating a neural network technique was proposed to optimize a diffuser blade profile for turbomachinery by Fan. 9 Kong et al 10 proposed a new method to determine the parameters of the guide vane of radial diffusers through mathematic relations.…”
