Multi-modal exercise programs for older adults

Abstract: Multi-modal exercise has a positive effect on falls prevention. The limited data available suggests that multi-modal exercise has a small effect on physical, functional and quality of life outcomes. Future research should include robustly designed trials that involve multi-modal exercise at individually prescribed intensities based on doses found to be effective in single-modality studies.

“…In a general analysis, as mentioned above, the program was effective in reversing and mitigating changes due to aging 10,49 , contrary to what has been found by other authors in interventions aimed at reducing falls 15 . Nonetheless, one of the most interesting findings in this study comes from a different interpretation of the results according to the type of analysis in question, which may explain the controversies found in the literature 14 .…”

“…The existence of a wide variety of programs 15 calls for debate about their outcomes 13,16 , which in turn implies carrying out studies on population subgroups using different types of analysis 13,[16][17][18][19] . Specific research tools and designs can assist in identifying not only program effectiveness but also program efficiency and use in terms of better physical performance, which is influenced by multiple factors including adherence to the program 20 .…”

“…Many studies [4,39] recommend an exercise program for maintaining physical functions and fall prevention; however, some older people do not have easy access to care prevention services or regular exercise because of their physical condition or surroundings. The low persistence rate of exercise owing to a lack of adherence has been discussed.…”
