Multi-functional effects of textiles dyed with madder roots powder (Rubiatinctoria)

Abstract: In this study, 100% cotton knit was premordanted with mimosa tannin and mimosa tannin/alum and dyed with a dyestuff extracted from Madder root. The degree of exhaustion was carry out by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The color fastness to light, wash, rubbing (wet and dry) and perspiration of the mordanted and dyed fabrics were evaluated according to specific ISO standard. The samples were tested for ultraviolet protection and antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus strains. The color fastness to washing an… Show more

“…On the other hand, Rubia tinctorum L. dye extracts have been used for dyeing and producing UV‐protective PET, wool and cotton fabrics with outstanding UPF values greater than 50. Furthermore, the UV‐transmittance rates of the dyed wool and cotton were lower than 2.5%, meeting the standard for an excellent UV‐protective property 38,208–210 . Bearing in mind that alizarin in the dye composition exhibited absorption maxima in the UV and visible regions at ca .…”

“…Furthermore, the UV-transmittance rates of the dyed wool and cotton were lower than 2.5%, meeting the standard for an excellent UV-protective property. 38,[208][209][210] Bearing in mind that alizarin in the dye composition exhibited absorption maxima in the UV and visible regions at ca. 245 and 430 nm, respectively, [211][212][213] the protective performance against UV radiation of the dyed textiles was therefore improved.…”

“…In another study conducted by Dumitrescu et al [ 55 ], alum gave lighter shades to the fabrics. It was also possible to obtain a red color in fabrics mordanted with mimosa tannin and dyed with the madder extract.…”

“…It was also possible to obtain a red color in fabrics mordanted with mimosa tannin and dyed with the madder extract. The combination of alum and mimosa in pre-mordanting provided red-orange and orange shades with 2 % mimosa/4 % alum and 8 % mimosa/15 % alum, respectively [ 55 ]. Also, according to Fernandes et al [ 48 ], the pH value changed the color of the fabric, when the pH of the solution increased, the color changed from yellow to purple.…”
