Mucous membrane involvement in generalized pustular psoriasis: Report of three cases and review of the literature

Abstract: Pustular eruptions on both skin and mucous membranes occur in the various forms of generalized pustular psoriasis. Three patients with generalized pustular psoriasis also had an eruption on the tongue resembling geographic tongue; one patient had sterile conjunctivitis. Histologically, the spongiform pustule of Kogoj is common to lesions of both skin and mucosa. We suggest that generalized pustular psoriasis be considered one of the mucocutaneous syndromes.

“…This was a case of pustular psoriasis in a young boy who presented with erythroderma which is a rare presentation of pustular psoriasis. The occurrence of mucosal involvement is also rare and was found in this patient who had sterile conjunctivitis [7]. The commoner presentation of pustular psoriasis in Malaysia are fever, painful skin, arthritis and leucocytosis [8].…”

Exaggerated anticipatory anxiety is common in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Neuroimaging studies have revealed altered neural activity in response to social stimuli in SAD, but fewer studies have examined neural activity during anticipation of feared social stimuli in SAD. The current study examined the time course and magnitude of activity in threat processing brain regions during speech anticipation in socially anxious individuals and healthy controls (HC). Method Participants (SAD n = 58; HC n = 16) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during which they completed a 90s control anticipation task and 90s speech anticipation task.

“…Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a systemic inflammatory disease that presents with erythema and sterile pustules, pathologically characterized by Kogoj's spongiform pustules. GPP is sometimes accompanied by mucosal involvement, and the most common lesion is on the tongue . We herein report a GPP patient with severe mucosal involvement, consequently causing gastrointestinal bleeding.…”

“…Some speculate that these oral manifestations may represent a forme fruste of pustular psoriasis 92 , while others believe oral mucosal manifestations are a harbinger of GPP 91, 94 . The most commonly reported ocular manifestation is purulent sterile conjunctivitis 11, 12, 95, 96 , however iridocyclitis 12 , corneal ulceration 12 and corneal exfoliation 97 may develop.…”
