Mucinous Cystadenoma With Brenner Tumor: A Case Report

Abstract: Surface epithelial tumors are the most common neoplasms of the ovary. Among these, mucinous tumors accounts for 14% of ovarian tumors. Coexistence of mucinous tumor with other surface epithelial tumors is rare. We report here a rare case of mucinous cystadenoma of the ovary, with Brenner component in a 52-year-old post-menopausal woman who presented with chief complaint of mass per abdomen since one month and retention of urine since one week. Coexistence of these two tumors supports the theory of a common ori… Show more

“…[13] Although the relationship between ovarian mucinous tumor and Brenner tumor is well known, there are few reported cases of the coexistence of these two types of ovarian tumors in the literature. [4] Here we review 7 case reports of mucinous neoplasm of ovary with Brenner tumor. The clinicopathological features of these cases are shown in Table 1.…”

“…In term of laterality Right:Left ovary ratio was found 4:3. [4,5,6,7,8,9,10] Our patient was also a post-menopausal woman with history of 5-month progressive abdominal discomfort and distention with huge 18 × 16 × 12 cm left ovarian mass who underwent explorative laprotomy with left adnexal excision and pathological diagnosis of borderline mucinous tumor associated with benign Brenner tumor was made. Ovarian mucinous tumors are divided into benign (mucinous cystadenoma), borderline, and malignant (mucinous carcinoma); majority mucinous tumors are benign or borderline.…”

“…Although the relationship between ovarian mucinous tumor and Brenner tumor is well known, the coexistence of two types of ovarian tumors has rarely been reported (5). Brenner tumors are formerly known as transitional cell tumors because of their histologic similarity to the urothelium.…”

“…Transitional cell tumors of the ovary (an uncommon subtype of the surface epithelial tumor) are rare neoplasms and account for about 2% of all ovarian tumors (4). About 20% of these tumors occur together with mucinous or serous cystadenomas or benign teratomas (5).…”
